Applying behaviour from weight texture mapping

Hey! I was trying to find if there was a way to create a texture for a map (terrain) that would apply different behaviours depending on the colour of that texture at that point. Just like weight painting in Bender applies behaviours to particles on a model, I would like to be able to modify that texture on the run and make the ground behave the way I want from it. For example, red could be making the ground on fire and green would create a zone in which trees could grow (random examples).
